Naturopath or physiotherapist? What is the difference?

A decisive difference already exists at the beginning of the therapy. The naturopath can examine the patient directly, i.e. no doctor’s prescription is required – however, a doctor’s recommendation is possible. The physiotherapist can examine the patient only with a doctor’s prescription, i.e. before the treatment,  a doctor must always be consulted.

The medical prescription is carried out by the physiotherapist and the medical diagnosis is supplemented by a physiotherapeutic finding. In contrast, the naturopath carries out his own diagnosis.

There are also differences in the treatment spectrum, which involves different risks. The physiotherapist limits himself to physiotherapy. The naturopath applies medicine according to his abilities, the legal requirements and the medical necessity.

In my practice, the spectrum of medicine in addition to physiotherapy, includes classical healing practice (such as cupping) and osteopathy (advanced methods such as visceral therapy, chiropractic treatments or craniosacral therapy).

In my practice, physiotherapy and naturopathy services are only billed privately.

The first appointment

In general, there is always the possibility of performing the treatment in the presence of an attendant (for example, a parent in the treatment of a child or an interpreter).

At the beginning there will be a detailed discussion , in which the current and chronic complaints, as well as living conditions are inquired. The conversation also serves for the patient to get to know the therapist, and all open questions can be discussed here.

It is recommended that you complete a 2-page questionnaire in advance, especially if you have a long medical history. I will gladly send you the questionnaire by post or e-mail before your first appointment. Please bring the completed questionnaire in paper form. Advantages of a pre-filled questionnaire are, on the one hand, the opportunity to fill it in calmly at home, and on the other hand save time for our first appointment.

If available, please bring current or relevant medical documents , e.g. X-rays, MRI scans, reports or medical certificates. You do not need to bring towels or such, they are made available for you in the practice.

After our conversation, a visual examination is carried out. Please pay attention to suitable clothing, e.g. normal underwear or short sportswear. This is followed by physical palpation findings and functional tests, whereby it usually comes to a smooth transition to treatment.

Each new therapy session is individually tailored to the patient’s symptoms. The exact course of treatment always depends on the individual case.

Notes about the treatment

If for any reason you can not make your appointment, please cancel 24 hours in advance.

Patients are generally advised to have a moderately filled stomach , especially in the case of visceral osteopathic treatment or abdominal lymphatic drainage.

It is recommended that you do not undertake any strenuous activities the day before or after treatment. This is especially true for osteopathic treatments. Walks in the fresh air are recommended – but an excessive workout in the gym would not be an advantage.

Also recommend is an adequate supply of still water, especially immediately after treatment. Still water is provided for you in the practice.

Treatment stimuli from osteopathic treatment can last up to 2 weeks. Reactions such as fatigue, vegetativeness restlessness, or an increased sensation of pain may occur, but are usually of short duration.

The frequency of treatment is fundamentally individual and depends on various factors: whether there is an acute or a chronic condition, which findings are present, and not least, how the effect of the treatment is felt by the patient. Physiotherapeutic treatments are usually done at shorter intervals, osteopathic treatments usually at rather long intervals.

Possibilities of payment

Payment can be made in practice directly after treatment in cash or by card payment, or by bank transfer after invoicing.

Treatment with osteopathy as a naturopathic achievement

Osteopathy duration and price

The duration of an osteopathic treatment depends on the need, is usually 50-60 min and costs 80,00 €.

Osteopathy access for self-payer

No medical prescription is necessary. If you would like to claim osteopathy and none of your costs are covered by your health insurance, you will be billed privately. On request, a financial statement can be made for the tax office, which under certain conditions can reduce income tax.

Osteopathy access for publically insured persons

Many public health insurances contribute to the cost of osteopathic treatment. Please inform yourself in advance about the possibility of a cost subsidy for osteopathy as a naturopath service through your health insurance. The following (external) link from the Bundesverband Osteopathie e.V. (BVO) provides further information:

https://bv-osteopathie.de/fuer-therapeuten/kostenerstattung-osteopathie/

Due to my extensive osteopathic education (1600 training hours) and my regular membership in the Bundesverband Osteopathie e.V. (BVO), I meet all requirements to be recognized by public health insurances.

Some public health insurances also require a medical certificate (for example, in the form of a private prescription with a diagnosis and the recommendation for osteopathy), which usually has to be issued before the beginning of osteopathic treatment. The certificate will be submitted to the health insurance along with the invoice.

The cost of the therapy will be paid by you and refunded retroactively depending on the subsidy by your health insurance.

Access to osteopathy for private or Beihilfe insured persons or publically insured persons with supplementary insurance

No medical prescription is necessary. Please inform yourself in advance about the reimbursement of osteopathy as a naturopath service through your health insurance. The billing takes place according to the GebüH (fees for naturopaths). Upon request, you will be given a list of fee numbers used in practice. The cost of the therapy will be paid by you and refunded retrospectively depending on the scope of the contract.

Osteopathy special access as a subject

Under certain circumstances you can be treated free of charge as a subject with osteopathy. Within the framework of my internal method development, suitable patients with certain key symptoms are sought out frequently. The treatment and evaluation of the therapy takes place in the same premises without external examiners. Currently, children and adults with certain headache symptoms are being sought out for. Test persons appointments are made only after preliminary contact, preferably by phone.

Treatment with physiotherapy

Physiotherapy for private or Beihilfe insured persons (duration and price)

A medical prescription is necessary before the start of treatment. Please inform yourself in advance about the reimbursement of physiotherapy through your health insurance. The duration of a physiotherapeutic treatment is determined by the prescribed services and costs about 65 €, with a treatment duration of 60 min as a guideline. The costs of the therapy are paid by yourself and reimbursed retroactively depending on the scope of your contract. If you would like to check the current prices of the individual services or have further questions about your prescription, you can contact me in advance.

Physiotherapy for publically insured persons

The treatment of publically insured persons with physiotherapy prescription is unfortunately not possible in my private practice (exceptions: public insurance with an additional insurance or subsidy of osteopathy). However, there is the possibility of recommendation to physiotherapeutic colleagues.

Physiotherapy for self-payers as a naturopathic service (duration and price)

No medical prescription is necessary. If you wish to take advantage of physiotherapy (for example, remedial gymnastics or manual lymphatic drainage) and none of your costs are covered from your health insurance, treatment will be provided as a naturopathic service and will be billed privately. The duration of a treatment depends on the need, is usually 50-60 min and costs 70,00 €. On request, a financial statement can be made for the tax office, which under certain conditions cane reduce income tax.

Home visits as a naturopath or physiotherapist

Home visits within Berlin can take place on the basis of an individual agreement. Home visits only after preliminary contact is made, preferably by phone.
